TEMPEST

I dry off my hair with the softest towel in the world, pausing to sniff the clean lavender and mint scent of the fabric. My hair is silkier than it’s ever been, thanks to the luxurious shampoo and conditioner in Massimo’s en suite bathroom, and I swear my skin is glowing after using his body wash.

I finish drying the rest of my body off, then wrap another towel around my body, sighing in contentment at the pre-warmed towel. Seriously, who lives like this? I knew Massimo was wealthy, but towel-warmer rack wealthy? Don’t get me started on the extravagant brick wall surrounding his property with ornate locked gates and guards standing watch.

Some part of me knows I’m getting in over my head. I have a lot of questions about the nature of Massimo’s work and why he hired me in the first place. And now I have more questions about why he needs to live in a fortress with armed guards. My mind is working overtime to put the pieces together, but my heart? My heart doesn’t give a damn.

As I step out into Massimo’s master bedroom wrapped only in a towel, I see he has a brush laid out on a vanity table across from the bed. Massimo said he’d join me once I was out of the shower, but I don’t see him here yet. I wander toward the vanity, trailing my fingers over the solid oak dresser and bookcase on my way there.

I decide to take a seat in front of the mirror on the vanity and brush my hair out while I wait. Dividing my hair into sections, I pull the brush through the strands, attempting to smooth out the tangles. The bristles snag on a particularly nasty knot, and I tug, trying to force the damn thing free.

“Let me,” a deep, comforting voice says from behind me. I look up and see Massimo’s reflection in the mirror. He’s standing behind me in nothing but a pair of sweatpants, and my eyes drift down to the packed muscles of his chest and abs.

Massimo gently takes the brush from my hand, and I look up to meet his eyes in the mirror. Slowly and so tenderly, the beast of a man takes one small section of my hair and begins brushing out the ends before moving up to work on the middle part, and finally the top of my head.

He continues his methodic, soothing process of combing through my hair, taking his time whenever he comes to a rough spot. Tears well up in my eyes as I watch Massimo take care of me, just like he promised he would.

When the first tear falls, Massimo pauses, his brow furrowing slightly. Instead of questioning me or making me feel embarrassed for crying, he simply leans forward and presses a kiss on the crown of my head. It’s like he knows I’ve never been treated like this, like I’m… precious and worthy of care.

“Feel whatever you need to feel, baby girl,” he murmurs.
